Keep your memories safe with WhatsApp and Google Drive

Whether it’s recounting a story, watching a video, or enjoying photos with family and friends, our memories help us reconnect with what’s really important. And every month, nearly a billion people use WhatsApp to do just that.
Of course: you don’t want your memories stuck on your phone. (What if something happens?!) So starting today, WhatsApp for Android lets you create a private backup of your chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos in Google Drive. And once you do, you can restore everything on a new device with just a couple taps.
The new backup feature is rolling out over the next few months, so keep an eye on your WhatsApp settings to see if it’s available. In the meantime, please visit our Help Center if you have questions about today’s update. And check out our developer site if you’d like to integrate your app with Google Drive.

I see app PIN lock is still not available for your Android app. It's been in 'iOS Drive' for a year or two now.

DeleteBecause these people forget who made them famous in the first place. If it wasn't for Android users and their lack of unified messaging like in iMessage, they wouldn't even be a twinkle in people's eyes.

ReplyDeleteOf course my friend, only content generated from Google Drive (i.e. Sheets, Docs, Slides and /or Drawings) and photos uploaded based on the "high-res" Drive's controlled feature doesn't count against your Drive storage.
DeleteOf course it would take some of your storage space buddy but also depends upon the "format" of media items that you're going to backup. In my case I just prefer backing up Text Messages so it would take a little space. Just updated to the latest version of WhatsApp using playstore but this feature is currently not available. We have to wait for next few weeks to get it.
DeleteGreat feature! But I would expect videos to either upload to Google Photos or YouTube and images to upload to Google Photos. Especially since WhatsApp decreases the resolution of the images (and videos?) - it fits perfectly with the "High quality storage" of the new Google Photos (as opposed to the the other "Original quality" option, that take up space, whether in Google Drive or Google Photos).
ReplyDeleteThe problem with quality is that WhatsApp resamples to save bandwidth. I don't see this being fixed any time soon, given WhatsApp's global userbase. It also throws away metadata, which is what I hate the most about its offering.
DeleteOther than that, I think you can get Google Drive videos and photos to show up in Google Photos, so that part of your feature request should already be covered?
Hangout should have already had this function integrated.

ReplyDeleteNot enabled in 2.12.304 which is available in the store. However, if you get 2.12.303 it's enabled...very odd.

ReplyDeleteSomething you could already do backing up whatsapp backup file from your mobile to anywhere else. That is while Android still does let you access your info in your mobile... its incredible how much stuff is hidden from you and your mobile and any equip. gets full of crap.
Why doing it the same way whatsapp works as a hidden file? Why not making something REALLY useful, that not only makes a copy, but lets you clearly see and delete useless things from your mobile from useless conversations or files you receive from them; that for example let you make smart archives of conversations that matter to you, or even graphics about them!?
LOOKS LIKE you just found a way to sell more cloud space....

Why is this feature available in some implementations of whatsapp but not others? I am moving to a new phone, and the backup to google drive is available on the new phone, but not on the old phone. Big problem.
